WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act into law 50 years ago on Thursday. The law promised to protect endangered plants and animals across the United States, and it passed with bipartisan support. In a statement released by the White House, President Joe Biden said the law has “safeguarded the incredible biodiversity across our Nation, supported the recovery of imperiled species, and conserved the habitats they depend on.”Before the act was signed into law in 1973, federal law did not protect species facing extinction. It allows species to be listed as endangered without consideration for the economic consequences, which some say is controversial. The White House credited the act with preventing 99% of all fish, wildlife, and plants under its protection from going extinct.“Because of these protections, nearly 300 species have avoided extinction—from the American alligator to the bald eagle,” President Biden said in a statement. The Endang...WATCH: Man makes 'dirt angels' while hiding from Hillsborough County deputies

Denver is nearing the finish line of Mayor Mike Johnston’s five-month sprint to move 1,000 homeless people off the streets — and with days to go before his self-imposed deadline, he and his team appear poised to pull it off.Just two months ago, Johnston’s mission was very much at risk of failing. Just 168 people had been brought inside as part of the initiative that has defined his short tenure in the mayor’s office. And neighborhoods were pushing back hard against vacant properties tabbed to host homeless micro-communities.Local politics have continued to challenge the mayor, forcing his administration to pivot more strongly to hotels to meet the target of his House 1,000 initiative which came with a target set for the last day of 2023, this Sunday. Johnston also has weathered recent controversy over shifting definitions of what counts toward that 1,000-person target, as local media reported that his office was using looser criteria than originally announced...Kanye West’s apology for antisemitic rants appears to be AI-generated, report says

The statement began: “I sincerely apologize to the Jewish community for any unintended outburst caused by my words or actions, it was not my intention to hurt or disrespect, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.” The statement wrapped up with the rapper vowing to “learn from this experience” and asking for forgiveness. “I am committed to making amends and promoting unity,” the apology ended.TMZ said the statement didn’t brim with the volatile rapper’s usual “animated flair.” So the site plu...'The ocean is not your friend': NWS warns of dangerous high surf Thursday

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — Demolition began Thursday on the house where four University of Idaho students were killed last year, marking an emotional step for the victims’ families and a close-knit community that was shocked and devastated by the brutal stabbings. The sounds of construction equipment pierced the early morning air as an excavator started tearing down the front part of the house. The former walls formed a large pile of crushed and smashed wood on the ground as debris was picked up and loaded into a dump truck. The owner of the rental home near the university campus in Moscow, Idaho, donated it to the university earlier this year. It has since been boarded up and blocked off by a security fence. Students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves were fatally stabbed there in November 2022. School officials, who in February announced plans to raze the house, view the demolition as a key step toward finding closure, university spokesperson Jodi Walker...Latest news
