Eva Kaili’s plot to blow up the Qatargate investigation

BRUSSELS — Nine months in, the blockbuster cash-for-influence Qatargate legal case could be about to collapse. Eva Kaili, the European Parliament’s former vice president who was arrested and charged with corruption in December, is now launching a daring legal challenge aimed at toppling the entire investigation, arguing the police and spy services acted illegally when they went after her. And she can already count on Andrea Cozzolino, another member of European Parliament who is charged in the case, to join in the effort.Months of planning by Kaili’s lawyers will come to a head at 9 a.m. on Tuesday in the Palace of Justice in Brussels, where the federal prosecutor has convened a meeting to consider the legal challenge. The first-of-its-kind gathering comes a year after Belgian authorities surreptitiously started probing whether lawmakers and officials at the European Parliament were taking bribes in exchange for political favors for Morocco and Qatar. When Ukraine’s trade representative, Taras Kachka, revealed to POLITICO that Kyiv was going to sue EU governments in a dispute over grain, it proved too much for one of the bloc’s diplomats to take. “Was that man drunk?” the exasperated envoy demanded, all thoughts of diplomacy vaporizing in the heat of his frustration. Ukraine made good on Kachka’s promise on Monday, formally filing lawsuits against Poland, Hungary and Slovakia at the World Trade Organization after the trio decided to defy Brussels and ban Ukrainian grain imports. The dispute has fractured European unity, leaving other EU diplomats privately furious with Poland, especially, for going rogue. And the clash is sorely testing relations between Kyiv and Brussels at a sensitive moment in Ukraine’s 18 month-old war against Russia’s invaders. The worst bit? It’s all just a taste of the fights to come. For his part, Kachka barely flinched at the “drunk” jibe. EU diplomats, he told POLITICO, were app...Authorities investigating NH man’s death after incident at Gillette Stadium during Patriots game

Weymouth community members gathered Monday to pay tribute to Weymouth police Sergeant Michael Chesna. Monday’s event marked the formal dedication of the gym at Maria Weston Chapman Middle School in honor of Chesna, who was killed in the line of duty on July 15, 2018. “For generations after us, they’ll know his name, who he was, how he served his nation and his community and how we honored him,” said Weymouth Police Chief Richard Fuller. “Sergeant Chesna was the very best of our police force, displaying unwavering resolve, courage and selflessness and protecting our community,” said Weymouth Superintendent of Schools Robert Wargo.Chesna was a US Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning a Purple Heart before serving the town of Weymouth as a police officer for six years.“Michael wanted to make a difference. NEW YORK (AP) — Rudy Giuliani’s former lawyer sued him Monday, alleging the ex-New York City mayor has paid only a fraction of nearly $1.6 million in legal fees he’s racked up from investigations into his efforts to keep Donald Trump in the White House.Robert Costello and his law firm, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP, say Giuliani has paid them just $214,000 and still has a $1.36 million tab. Giuliani’s last payment, according to the lawsuit, was $10,000 on Sept. 14 — about a week after Trump hosted a $100,000-a-plate fundraiser for Giuliani at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club.Costello and the firm say Giuliani, once celebrated as “America’s mayor” for his leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, breached their retainer agreement by failing to pay his invoices in full in a timely fashion. They seek full payment of his unpaid bills, as well as costs and fees stemming from their efforts to get him to pay up.“I can’t express how personally hurt I am by what Bob ...Pilots racing in WWII-era planes die in midair collision shortly after first-second finish in Reno

The Mike Babcock era with the Columbus Blue Jackets ended before it ever really began and his signing can officially be declared a failed endeavour from top to bottom.“We went through a process earlier this summer prior to hiring Mike Babcock as our head coach, but we got it wrong and that’s on us,” Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson said at a press conference Monday afternoon less than 24 hours after the team and Babcock parted ways on the cusp of the 2023-24 NHL season.Babcock resigned as the team’s head coach Sunday, less than three months after being hired and mere days after allegations surfaced that he had been asking to see photos on players’ smartphones while getting to know them, which resulted in some players reportedly feeling uncomfortable.Although multiple Blue Jackets players such as captain Boone Jenner and star forward Johnny Gaudreau made public comments downplaying how Babcock’s get-to-know-you methods were...An airstrike on a military airport in northern Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region kills 3 people

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — An airstrike on a military airport in northern Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region killed three people Monday, local officials said. The region’s counter-terrorism service said in a statement that the attack on the Arbat Airport, 28 kilometers southeast of the city of Suleimaniyah killed three of its personnel and injured three members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces. The airport had recently undergone rehabilitation to facilitate the training of anti-terror units affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, one of the two often-competing main parties in the region, whose seat of power is in Sulaymaniyah. The counter-terrorism service did not blame the attack on any party, but the Sulaymaniyah governorate in a statement urged “countries in the region to respect the sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” implying that the strike was carried out by Turkey. Also on Monday, the Kurdistan National Congress, an umbrella organization of Kurdish groups and part...Two migrant shelters set to open in Near West Side by Friday
