The primary visual stroke in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer isn’t, as you might expect, a wow 8K CGI rendering of atomic-fission heat-death but super close-ups of Cillian Murphy’s bony, glassy-eyed visage in the throes of one neurotic seizure or another. From his postgrad days at Cambridge to his last, persecuted post–Los Alamos guilt trips, Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer, “the father of the atomic bomb,” seems in a more or less constant state of tremulous dysphoria. Nolan means to get under this enigmatic figure’s sweaty skin, and to do it in peripheral IMAX and tympanic-cavity-sundering Dolby 5.1. So he gets close, often. It might be the longest and most expensive Hollywood movie dedicated to a real man’s neurotic anxiety. If only monster close-ups were by nature revelatory. Well, at least Nolan’s not out concocting yet another scientifically preposterous and incomprehensible “mind-bender,” but, rather, returning to the WWII era, where he so fabulously upended the brain-free summe...West Oakland community leaders rally against renewed threat from proposed coal terminal

OAKLAND — At the West Side Missionary Baptist Church, a few dozen community members gathered Saturday to renew a decade-long fight to prevent the city from becoming the coal shipping capital of the East Bay.Surrounded by banners picturing coal carts emblazoned with a skull and crossbones, speakers outlined their case against a terminal that would ship coal overseas. Residents have expressed concern over coal dust adding to pollution in the area, which already copes with environmental issues brought by heavy truck and ship traffic around the Port of Oakland.“No longer can communities be used as toxic waste dumps so people can make a whole lot of money and not care about our health,” said Reverend Ken Chambers, the founder and president of the Interfaith Council of Alameda County, which hosted the event.Oakland councilwoman for District 3, Carroll Fife, center, and members of the community attend the No Coal in Oakland rally at West Side Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, Calif., o...Erik Karlsson discusses ongoing Sharks trade situation and names some teams he’s talked with: report

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — The fascination with Brian Harman at the British Open has little to do with his golf so far. It’s rare in Britain to hear tales of hunting turkey, learning to skin a deer at age 8 and packing wild game in the freezer for his family to eat.One tabloid called him “Brian the Butcher.” Another headline screamed, “I Shoot to Thrill.”Harman’s only concern is bagging the biggest trophy of his career, and he stayed on target Saturday by overcoming an early wobble with a remarkably steady hand. His 8-foot par putt on the last hole at Royal Liverpool gave him a 2-under 69 and allowed him to keep his five-shot lead, leaving him 18 holes away from becoming a major champion.“I’ve thought about winning majors for my whole entire life,” Harman said. “It’s the whole reason I work as hard as I do and why I practice as much as I do and why I sacrifice as much as I do. Tomorrow if that’s going to come to fruition for me, it has to be all about the golf. It has to be ...4 missing after record-breaking downpours along Canada’s Atlantic coast cause flooding
