WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve is facing stinging criticism for missing what observers say were clear signs that Silicon Valley Bank was at high risk of collapsing into the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history. The Fed was the primary federal supervisor of the bank based in Santa Clara, California, that failed last week. The bank was also overseen by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.Critics point to many red flags surrounding Silicon Valley Bank, including its rapid growth since the pandemic, its unusually high level of uninsured deposits and its many investments in long-term government bonds and mortgage-backed securities, which tumbled in value as interest rates rose.“It’s inexplicable how the Federal Reserve supervisors could not see this clear threat to the safety and soundness of banks and to financial stability,” said Dennis Kelleher, chief executive of Better Markets, an advocacy group.Wall Street traders and industry analysts “hav...Where is the best pie in Denver metro area?

There was danger on duty for some police officers as they were serving a warrant. Miami-Dade Police Department’s Special Response Team came under fire while serving the warrant at a home on Fifth Avenue and 82nd Terrace, Tuesday morning. “There was an individual in the master bedroom that was barricaded inside, and as they were approaching that master bedroom, multiple gunshots were fired from within that bedroom out,” said MDPD Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. According to police, the shots were fired at around 6:30 a.m. by a man at the center of a violent felony investigation. “Not only did he open fire towards our officers but had a total disregard that he had a 1-year-old inside of that bedroom as well,” Zabaleta said. No one was hurt during the standoff. This latest incident comes days after another MDPD officer came under fire and was grazed in the head as he tried to make an arrest. STRASBOURG — The leaders of the two largest political groups in the European Parliament traded barbs Tuesday over the Spanish government’s stance on Ukraine.Spanish Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is preparing to send Leopard tanks and more weapons to Ukraine, despite opposition from the far-left Podemos, the junior partner in the ruling coalition, which has warned this will only escalate the war and has pressed for peace talks.Manfred Weber, the leader of the center-right European People’s Party, said at a press conference that the tensions inside the government in Madrid could mean problems when Spain takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in July.“I would ask that Sánchez clarifies what is the opinion of the Spanish government in regard to Ukraine. We cannot accept any kind of uncertainty in such a moment of history,” the German EPP leader said, referring to a series of votes in the Spanish parliament last week in which Podemos voted differently to the...Europe’s coronavirus vaccine glut leads to call for contract transparency

Poland’s Health Minister Adam Niedzielski called on the European Commission on Tuesday to explain why it entered into a large COVID-19 vaccine contract at the height of the pandemic that has left the bloc on the hook for millions of unused doses. Niedzielski was answering a request for comment by POLITICO on Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s personal involvement in securing Europe’s biggest vaccine contract, for up to 1.8 billion doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine. The top EU official’s exact role in the negotiations has been an open question since the New York Times reported that she personally exchanged messages with Pfizer’s Chief Executive Albert Bourla in the run-up to the deal. The minister called the issue of how the negotiations were conducted “the next question mark.”“People are also asking questions in Poland. How it is possible that the number of doses is so high? … We want a straight explanation,” s...More than two feet of snow hits parts of Mass. as nor’easter flakes head south before tapering off Wednesday

(CNN) — The US Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday proposed the first national drinking water standard for “forever chemicals” that are dangerous to human health. The move could radically affect drinking water for nearly everyone in the United States. The new rule intends to set drinking water standards for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.” PFAS are a family of ubiquitous synthetic chemicals that linger in the environment and the human body, where they can cause serious health problems.Although there are thousands of PFAS chemicals, according to the National Institutes of Health, under the rule, water systems would have to monitor for six specific chemicals, notify the public about PFAS levels and work to reduce them if levels go above the standard allowed.“I am thrilled to announce that EPA is taking yet another bold step to protect public health,” said US Envi...Latest news
