MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Sampson Zheng shot a 6-under 65 at Royal Melbourne on Saturday despite gusting winds to take a four-stroke lead into the final round of the Asia-Pacific Amateur.Chinese player Zheng’s three-round total of 3-under 210 was the only score under par in the tournament which awards the winner an invitation to the 2024 Masters and a spot in next year’s British Open at Royal Troon, along with being exempt from qualifying for the British Amateur. Zheng, who started the day six strokes behind and tied for 13th, set an amateur Composite Course record at Royal Melbourne.Zheng broke the amateur record of 66 held by Michael Bonallack, whom the trophy is named after, for 55 years and matched earlier this week by New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori.“I just kept myself really patient,” Zheng said. “I used the contours of the greens well. It felt like I was on a different golf course today. One of those days.”Australian Billy Dowling shot 73 and was in second place at 1-over...

England seeks face-saving turnaround against India at the Cricket World Cup

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 17:12:28 GMT

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — When the Cricket World Cup schedule was announced in July, India vs. England on Sunday was expected to be a marquee match. It will be anything but.England’s poor showing at the World Cup so far has befuddled even its most ardent fans. One win from five games is the worst showing for a defending champion since 1999, when 1996 winners Sri Lanka won two out of five league games and failed to qualify for the next stage of that tournament.England’s only win so far came at Dharamsala — beating Bangladesh by 137 runs. It is ninth in the points’ table with a minus 1.634 run-rate.“I am not a mathematician but it is over now — with our net run-rate and too many teams who are going to take games off each other, we have to come to terms with that from now. We are (only) playing for a lot of pride,” England coach Matthew Mott said after an eight-wicket loss to Sri Lank a.Despite what Mott said, England is still mathematically alive. If it wins four games in a row and reaches...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ketel Marte is becoming the Joe DiMaggio of October.Every time he’s played a postseason game, Marte has at least one hit. His latest, a fifth-inning RBI double off Nathan Eovaldi, gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a two-run lead in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to the Texas Rangers that opened the World Series on Friday night. While a fraction of Joe D.’s record 56-game hitting streak for the 1941 New York Yankees, Marte’s 17-game run is the longest at the start of a postseason career. The switch-hitting infielder tied the overall postseason record, matching a mark shared by the New York Yankees’ Hank Bauer (1956-58 World Series), the Yankees’ Derek Jeter (1998-99) and Boston’s Manny Ramirez (2003-04).Marte didn’t get the souvenir ball.“It stays in the mind. Memories,” he said.Marte is hitting .345 with two homers and nine RBIs in 13 games this postseason. He lined a curveball from Nathan Eovaldi 402 feet off the base of the wall ...
