Guaranteed basic income program for formerly incarcerated moves forward with vote (BCN) -- A pilot program to provide guaranteed basic income to 100 Santa Clara County residents who have been incarcerated or were otherwise under supervision by the justice system took another step forward Tuesday as the county Board of Supervisors was updated on a potential budget and planning process. The program will provide $1,200 a month for two years, if approved. It is one of four guaranteed basic income initiatives being tested by Santa Clara County, most of which are in the planning phase. Ky Le, a deputy county executive who gave the presentation Tuesday, told the board that the guaranteed basic income program would cost $4 million. Supervisors allocated $2 million from the county's American Rescue Plan Act funds, which will be supplemented by $1 million each from the state...

Earlier this month, the junta reportedly installed eight top security officials to govern its seven regions and the capital district. This consolidation of power included the appointments of Brig. Gens. Iro Oumarou and Ibrahim Bagadoma; Col. Maj. Oumarou Tawayé; Inspector General of Police Issoufou Mamane; and Col. Labo Issoufou. All have “participated in U.S.-sponsored training,” a State Department spokesperson said in response to questions from The Intercept....

Denver among top 15 most fun cities in US

Published Thu, 14 Nov 2024 21:57:38 GMT

Denver among top 15 most fun cities in US DENVER (Stacker) — People crunch any variety of metrics when settling on a city to visit or live in. Some of these factors have to do with the cost of living or staying, or how easy it is to go around by foot or public transit. Other considerations might be in the architecture, culture, and history of a place. But for many people, there's one prevailing question: Is it any fun? Some cities offer the same degree of fun or even the same type of fun, of course, so how do you figure out where to cut loose? To find out, and because "fun" can be an elusive variable, Stacker referred to WalletHub data which applies science in its methodology. The site compared 182 cities—including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state—across three dimensions: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and cost. Next, the cities were evaluated according to 65 key metrics, which ranged from fitness centers per capita to movie costs to average...

Where do Denver restaurants get their seafood? DENVER (KDVR) — It's not a secret, landlocked states like Colorado don't have saltwater fish. Most fish get shipped in from coastal states, but it's not just the expected seafood states like Boston or Maine, local restaurants get fish from all over. Did you know Denver is one of the freshest non-coastal places you can get fish? FOX31 asked local seafood restaurants where they get their fish from and how quickly it gets to the restaurant. Surprisingly, most of the answers were different:Water GrillWater Grill gets some of its fish from southern California, but it's really all over. The restaurant requests oysters from wherever they're in season. "We offer Kumamoto year round, but that's probably our most varied oyster. So right now we have Kumamoto from California. But just a couple of weeks ago, we had some from Mexico, and soon we will start sourcing them from Washington. So we get them from all over the coastline, depending on the season," said Mallory Fink, general manager at ...

Bidens to visit Hawaii on Monday following Maui wildfires (CNN) — President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden will travel to Hawaii on Monday, the White House announced, as search, rescue and recovery efforts continue following the devastating wildfires there.“The President and First Lady will travel to Maui on Monday, August 21 to meet with first responders, survivors, as well as federal, state, and local officials, in the wake of deadly wildfires on the island,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. The planned visit comes amid mounting pressure on Biden, who – despite signing a federal disaster declaration last week – had only sparingly referenced the disaster, which has left at least 100 dead. The relative silence did not go unnoticed by Biden’s critics, including former President Donald Trump and other Republicans, and the Biden administration in recent days has been promoting its commitment to helping local authorities recover and rebuild. The Bidens, Jean-Pierre said, will “see firsthand the impacts...
