The sky cleared up enough for the Chicago White Sox to resume their series with the New York Yankees.Instead of the haze the smoke from Canadian wildfires created, there were plenty of longballs during Game 1 of the doubleheader Thursday at Yankee Stadium. The Sox hit four home runs on their way to their fifth straight win, beating the Yankees 6-5.“Home runs were the name of the game,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said.Eloy Jiménez put them ahead with a two-run homer off Michael King in the seventh.“(I thought) ‘Just bring (Luis) Robert (Jr.) to home plate,’ ” Jiménez said. “Thank God I did.”Jake Burger, Robert and Yoán Moncada homered earlier for the Sox, who moved within three games of first place in the American League Central with the victory. The teams played two Thursday after Major League Baseball postponed Wednesday’s game because of what it called “clearly hazardous air quality.”Burger lined a t...Matt Dermody’s resurfaced social media bigotry activity paints Red Sox in unflattering light

“Harassment and discrimination have no place within or around Major League Baseball – we must work together to build an even playing field for all those involved in our beloved game.”So reads the penultimate line of Major League Baseball’s official harassment policy.Yet anyone who’s spent time in or around the game, or is familiar with the league’s history, knows that there are often exceptions, especially when it might benefit the on-field product. The Red Sox made such a choice on Thursday night, when they deployed Matt Dermody to start their series finale in Cleveland. Faced with an injury-ravaged, underperforming pitching staff, they selected his contract from Triple-A Worcester, and opened the floodgates.Almost exactly two years ago, Dermody tweeted: “#PrideMonth. Homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God. They will go to hell. This is not my opinion, but the #Truth. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9. Still have a stockpile of masks from the pandemic? They may come in handy this summer, as seen in cities along the East Coast this week with people again putting on masks to deal with the hazardous smoke from the raging Canadian wildfires. The smoke and haze conditions have drastically improved in Massachusetts since Tuesday, but meteorologists warn that the wildfire smoke could return in waves over the next several weeks. When those high concentrations of smoke come back, masks will help reduce peoples’ exposure to the PM2.5 air pollution from wildfires, according to John Rogan, professor of geography at Clark University in Worcester.“If people are outside, wearing masks during those hazardous air quality days will be important,” Rogan, whose recent research projects have involved mapping wildfire burn severity in southern California and southeastern Arizona, told the Herald on Thursday. He noted that N95 respirator masks offer far greater protection than cloth masks....Trump calls documents indictment ‘warfare with the law’

By ERIC TUCKER, JILL COLVIN and MICHAEL BALSAMO (Associated Press)MIAMI (AP) — Donald Trump said Thursday that he has been indicted on charges of mishandling classified documents at his Florida estate, igniting a federal prosecution that is arguably the most perilous of multiple legal threats against the former president as he seeks to reclaim the White House. The Justice Department did not immediately publicly confirm the indictment. But two people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to discuss it publicly said that the indictment included seven criminal counts. One of those people said Trump’s lawyers were contacted by prosecutors shortly before he announced on his Truth Social platform that he had been indicted. The indictment enmeshes the Justice Department in the most politically explosive prosecution in its long history.
