Red Sox top Twins 5-4 in 10 on Verdugo’s unusual hit BOSTON (AP) — Alex Verdugo singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning on a fly ball that barely stayed fair at Fenway Park, giving the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins in a bizarre finish Tuesday night.Umpires needed a few minutes to review Verdugo’s drive, which bounced off the low wall in right field just short of Pesky’s Pole, before officially declaring it a hit and the game over. That sparked a second round of celebrating by the Red Sox, who got 11 strikeouts from starter Chris Sale but little offense until the end.Reese McGuire had just tied it with a two-run single as the Red Sox rallied after allowing two runs in the top of the 10th. McGuire entered as a pinch hitter in the eighth and reached on a key defensive error when Christian Vázquez was called for catcher’s interference. The play helped Boston score once in the eighth and eventually force the extra inning, which featured more offense than the previous nine comb...

Chris Sale strikes out 11, Alex Verdugo delivers walk-off as Red Sox win 5-4 in 10 innings The reports of Chris Sale’s demise as an ace appear to have been greatly exaggerated.Though he received little run support from the Red Sox offense, the big lefty delivered his best outing since before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Sale struck out 11 Minnesota Twins batters, including six in the first two innings alone, and allowed only one run over six strong innings of work. The Red Sox went on to win 5-4 in the 10th inning, with Alex Verdugo capping off a wild sequence with a walk-off single off the wall below Pesky’s Pole, which barely stayed fair and left the players and crowd hanging before the call was upheld on review.Even though he didn’t wind up factoring into the decision, Sale’s performance was an encouraging development for the Red Sox.“There are no words,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Sale’s performance. “It was great, that’s a good lineup and he was under control, fastball played tonight and after that he just...

Lucas Giolito’s 6 no-hit innings help the Chicago White Sox earn a doubleheader split with the Philadelphia Phillies Lucas Giolito had no-hit stuff.Only a high pitch count prevented the Chicago White Sox starter from possibly going the distance in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies.Giolito left after the sixth inning without allowing a hit, but he threw 102 pitches. After Kendall Graveman retired the side in order in the seventh, the Phillies broke up the combined no-hit bid when Brandon Marsh led off the eighth with a double to left against Aaron Bummer. The Sox had to settle for a one-hitter in a 3-0 victory in front of 12,542 at Guaranteed Rate Field.“I knew I wouldn’t get through nine; I lobbied for the seventh,” Giolito said. “I understand going out in April already at 102 pitches is kind of a tough spot.“If it was 102 pitches after seven or eight, then maybe we have more leeway, but understandably hand it off to the bullpen and let them shut it down for three innings, which is what they did.”The Sox earned a spl...

Celtics respond after slow start, take control of series with Game 2 victory over Hawks For the first six minutes on Tuesday night, the Celtics were at their worst. They were lazy on offense. Jaylen Brown committed three turnovers in the opening minutes. Their defense – which was so good in Game 1 – was an open door. The Celtics were expecting a strong Hawks response and they got it.But when Joe Mazzulla turned to his bench, everything changed. The deepest team in the NBA showed itself again, even if Mazzulla has only gone eight deep to start the playoffs. Robert Williams, then Malcolm Brogdon entered the game and the Celtics went off and running. After falling behind early, the Celtics ripped off a huge first-half run and never looked back as they took complete control of their first-round series with a 119-106 Game 2 victory.Jayson Tatum scored 29 points – including five 3-pointers – and some big buckets down the stretch as the Celtics held off several rallies from Dejounte Murray and the Hawks. Alabama House OKs ban on trans athletes at a college level MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Transgender women in Alabama would be prohibited from joining female sports teams in college under legislation advanced Tuesday by the Alabama House of Representatives — a part of a wave of restrictions on transgender people being pushed in conservative states. The House voted 83-5 in favor of the legislation that would extend a 2021 ban on transgender athletes in K-12 sports teams to include college teams. The bill states that sports teams “designated for females, women, or girls shall not be open to a biological male.” Similarly, a “biological female” would also not be allowed to participate on teams for boys and men. The legislation now moves to the Alabama Senate. “Forcing women to compete against biological men would reverse decades of progress women have made for equal opportunity in athletics,” Republican Rep. Susan DuBose, the bill’s sponsor, told lawmakers. DuBose said that “no amount of hormone therapy can undo” physical advantages. At least 20 othe...

Red Sox win against the Twins decided in a see-saw, full-of-suspense 10th inning BOSTON — All night, it seemed, Boston Red Sox hitters were mounting threat after threat, on the verge of breaking through against Sonny Gray. They never did, a credit to the veteran starter on a night when he seemed to be working without his best stuff.Red Sox starter Chris Sale looked like vintage Sale at the beginning of the game, striking out seven of nine batters the first time through the order. And yet, though the Red Sox threatened all night and the Twins were limited to just four hits, the game wasn’t decided until a see-saw 10th inning when, after the Twins scored two runs in the top of the inning, the Red Sox walked off with three more. After a lengthy review where both teams were standing on the field awaiting their fate, Alex Verdugo’s hit to right was confirmed, handing the Red Sox a 5-4 10-inning win at Fenway Park. That came after a Reese McGuire two-run single earlier in the inning that tied the game, washing out the two runs the Twins had scored on a Byron Buxton sacr...
