Wall Street retreated modestly early Monday as investors look ahead to updates on consumer spending and inflation in the U.S. and other nations. Futures for the Dow Jones industrials and the S&P 500 each ticked down less than 0.2% before the bell.Markets were mostly quiet coming off a holiday shortened week, the fourth straight winning week for Wall Street.Traders have recently grown cautiously optimistic that inflation has cooled enough for the Federal Reserve to finally be done with its market-crunching hikes to interest rates. The Fed will get another big update this week when the government on Thursday releases its October report for a key inflation measure tracked by the central bank.Tuesday’s consumer confidence report from the Conference Board will give economists data on how Americans are feeling about the economy as the holiday shopping season gets underway.Elsewhere, in Europe at midday France’s CAC 40 edged 0.1%, Germany’s DAX fell 0.2% and Britain...Barcelona looks to regain best form and secure return to knockout stage of Champions League

MADRID (AP) — A win against Porto will be enough to put Barcelona back in the knockout rounds of the Champions League after two consecutive group-stage eliminations. It may not be enough to ease the pressure on coach Xavi Hernández, who has struggled to get his team to play well recently.Barcelona is coming off a stretch that includes a 1-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in its last Champions League game, and a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano in its previous Spanish league match. The team has even produced lackluster performances when winning recent matches.“Things did not go as expected lately,” Xavi said. “Against Rayo it was better, but we have lacked continuity. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us. It can be a turning point. I really believe we will be playing better again. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t even be here.”Barcelona will advance with a win, or with a draw if Shakhtar doesn’t beat Antwerp in the other Group H match on Tuesday. Consumers are scouring the internet for online deals as they begin to cap off the five-day post-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza with Cyber Monday. Even though e-commerce is now part and parcel of our everyday lives and much of the holiday shopping season, Cyber Monday –- a term coined back in 2005 by the National Retail Federation –- continues to be the biggest online shopping day of the year, thanks to the deals and the hype the industry has created to fuel it. For several major retailers, the “Cyber Monday” sale is a days-long event that begins over the weekend. Amazon’s, for example, kicked off on Saturday and runs through Monday. Target’s two-day event began overnight on Sunday, while Arkansas-based Walmart kicked off its most recent discounts Sunday evening. Consumer spending for Cyber Week — the five major shopping days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday — provides a strong indication on how much shoppers are willing to spend during the holiday season. DENVER (AP) — The third and final trial over the 2019 death of Elijah McClain after he was stopped by police in suburban Denver involves homicide and manslaughter charges against two paramedics. It's a prosecution experts say enters largely uncharted legal territory by levying criminal charges against medical first responders.McClain had been stopped and put into a neck hold by police that left him weakened when the paramedics arrived and injected him with the powerful sedative ketamine. The 23-year-old Black man went into cardiac arrest on his way to the hospital and was pronounced dead three days later.Initially no one was charged because the coroner’s office could not determine exactly how McClain died. But in 2021, social justice protests over the 2020 murder of George Floyd drew renewed attention to McClain's case, prompting an indictment against the paramedics and three officers. 1 officer found guilty of homicide in Elijah McClain case, 2nd officer acquitted Jury selection ...MVP Super Bowl champ still giving back to Colorado

AVONDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — In a holiday crime that could rival a classic Grinch tale, a thief turned festivities sour by swiping an inflatable Santa from an Avondale family’s front yard. The Lott family, victims of this festive theft, is now speaking out about the incident that left their 4-year-old, George, heartbroken.“I put up some lights, try to add a bit each year, and one of the last pieces I set up was our inflatable Santa that my kids love,” said Brandon Lott. Last week, as the Lott family began their holiday season with decorations, security footage captured the heart-wrenching moment when a thief unplugged and stole the beloved inflatable Santa.“To let him know someone came by and stole something he was excited about on the lawn, I think that’s the part that’s most disappointing,” expressed Brandon. The family is now considering adding more security measures and staying vigilant against porch pirates. The incident adds a somber note to...COVID inquiry: UK’s top official Simon Case ‘excused’ from appearing this year

His absence from the heart of government was first reported by POLITICO in October.A statement from the inquiry’s Chair Heather Hallett, published Monday, confirms Case won’t appear in 2023, despite the inquiry currently digging into key decision-making during the pandemic. The inquiry’s statement said Hallett had been provided with information about Case’s health. After reviewing this, she said she was” satisfied that Mr Case should be excused from giving oral evidence at the Module 2 hearings in 2023.”“However, it very much remains my intention that Mr Case should give oral evidence to the inquiry,” Hallett added.
