Turkey’s Erdogan wins another term as president, extends rule into 3rd decade Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won reelection Sunday, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule into a third decade as the country reels from high inflation and the aftermath of an earthquake that leveled entire cities.A third term gives Erdogan an even stronger hand domestically and internationally, and the election results will have implications far beyond Ankara. The head of Turkey’s electoral board confirmed the victory, saying that even after accounting for outstanding votes, the result was another term for Erdogan. In his first comments since the polls closed, Erdogan thanked the nation for entrusting him with the presidency for five more years.“We hope to be worthy of your trust, as we have been for 2...

Bill increasing power to TCOLE passes AUSTIN (KXAN) – The legislature has passed a bill to give the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement more authority to set law enforcement standards and more control over the creation of new departments. The measure now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.The TCOLE reforms in Senate Bill 1445 by Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney, were years in the making. Paxton is a member of the Sunset Advisory Commission, and her bill was created from recommendations made by that agency after years of review. Years-long struggle to reform TCOLE may end this legislative session In a January 2023 report, the Sunset Commission described TCOLE as “toothless” and said it “had relatively limited authority to set or enforce anything but minimum licensure standards and had no meaningful role in setting or enforcing standards of conduct for law enforcement personnel or holding them accountable.”Under the new law, TCOLE would develop new minimum standards — with the help of an advisory...

Anatomy of an excellent road trip: How SF Giants returned home with winning record MILWAUKEE — The midwest weather was beautiful this week. But when it rained, it seemed to pour. The Giants failed to complete a four-game sweep of the Brewers, losing 7-5, after falling in too deep of an early hole for the second time this trip. All of their other five contests however ended in wins, and the Giants (27-26) boarded their charter flight back home Sunday afternoon with a pair of series victories and a winning record in their back pocket. All in all, the loss Sunday was only their third in their past 13 games, and their 5-2 record in the seven-game swing against the two Central division leaders amounted to their best mark on a road trip this season. With three games to play this month, the Giants are 16-10 in May, and despite Sunday’s result, appear to have turned a corner.1) It’s all in the pitchingAlex Cobb was tagged for seven runs — all in the first two innings — and snapped a couple streaks in the process. It was the first time all season that Cobb, the Gi...
