AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has become the most populous state to ban gender-affirming care for minors after Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation on Friday. Texas joined at least 18 other states that have enacted similar bans.Every major medical organization, including the American Medical Association, has opposed the bans and supported the medical care for youth when administered appropriately. Lawsuits have been filed in several states where bans have been enacted this year.Last year, Abbott became the first governor to order the investigation of families who were receiving care. The investigations were later halted by a Texas judge. The GOP-controlled Legislature sent the bill to Abbott last month. Republicans in the Senate took the final vote over the objections from Democrats, who used parliamentary maneuvers to delay passage but could not derail it entirely. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A man charged in the death of an 80-year-old Pflugerville man earlier this month may actually be a "serial killer," Austin law enforcement officials announced last week. Raul Meza Jr., 62, was most recently charged with the murder of his roommate Jesse Fraga, 80. During his conversation with detectives, Meza also implicated himself in the murder of Gloria Lofton, 66, in 2019, according to police. Law enforcement now say there are additional cold cases they're looking at in connection to Meza, who also previously spent time in prison for the 1982 rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl. So what comes next for Meza? Here is some of our conversation with Austin defense attorney, Rick Cofer, about Meza's legal future. This transcript has been edited for brevity: First, can you give an idea of legally what this is going to look like moving forward?Short version, Raul Meza is in deep trouble. Think again.

Up 1-0 in the NBA Finals, the way Nuggets coach Michael Malone spoke on Saturday after practice, you’d think his team had actually dropped the series opener.“Yeah, I don’t think we played well in Game 1,” Malone said.Miami’s poor 3-point shooting, which included just 5 for 16 on wide-open 3s on Thursday night? Not going to happen again, Denver’s coach said bruskly.“As I told our players this morning, the fact that they got 16 wide-open 3s is problematic, and if you think that Max Strus is going to go 0 for 9 again or Duncan Robinson is going to go 1 for 5 again, you’re wrong,” he said.Barely prompted, Malone turned his attention to the fourth quarter where the Nuggets were outscored 30-20 and saw a sizable double-digit lead shrink to just nine as the Heat found its 3-point stroke. Think Malone, with a chance to do something no other team in Nuggets history has done, would allow for even an ounce of complacency? Think again.
