(THE CONVERSATION) The holiday season is upon us, and with it, opportunities to indulge in festive treats. The proverbial saying “you eat with your eyes first” seems particularly relevant at this time of year. The science behind eating behavior, however, reveals that the process of deciding what, when and how much to eat is far more complex than just consuming calories when your body needs fuel. Hunger cues are only part of why people choose to eat. As a scientist interested in the psychology and biology that drives eating behavior, I’m fascinated with how the brain’s experiences with food shape eating decisions. So how do people decide when to eat?Eating with your eyesFood-related visual cues can shape feeding behaviors in both people and animals. AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Friday, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced he filed a lawsuit to stop the federal Department of Transportation’s new greenhouse gas reporting measure.According to the AG’s office, the U.S. Department of Transportation does not have the authority to establish the rule.“The mandate violates the Administrative Procedure Act. Further, the rule is arbitrary and capricious and violates the Spending Clause by impermissibly restricting the use of federal funds by requiring TxDOT to implement the greenhouse gas measure,” Paxton said.According to a release from the AG’s office, the new rule would require the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to establish a declining carbon dioxide target associated with transportation as a performance measure for the Interstate and National Highway System.“The federal government claims this mandate is necessary to meet the Biden administration’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to reach net-zero across the economy by 20...Gophers football vs. Bowling Green: Keys to bowl game, how to watch, who has edge

Emmanuel Louisnord Desir makes painting, assemblage, and sculpture that sings a strange song of ancient times and modern life, mysticism, empire, religions of the book, global diaspora and allegorical testimony. Within this ambitious framework, Desir’s stylistic approach is omnivorous in its influences and yields an edgy, folk-infused surrealism. His contorted arks, sweeping scenic histories, individual creatures of human, animal, and otherwise unknown origin all combine and consort, arraying themselves inside symbol-rich political and personal parables—as inscrutable and poetic as biblical verses, but also just as clear in their intention to impart a higher message. With his large-scale painting, The Fall of Babylon, Desir contributes a perspective of faith to the biennial’s focus on everyday life as inspiration.Emmanuel Louisnord Desir, The Fall of Babylon, 2023, Oil on wood, 48 × 68 in (Private Collection.
