Colorado funeral home owner accused of abandoning nearly 200 bodies may be close to leaving jail

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:53:32 GMT

An owner of a Colorado funeral home accused of abandoning nearly 200 bodies in a building for years was worried as far back as 2020 about getting caught, a prosecutor said Thursday at a hearing where the prosecution objected to lowering his bond.“My one and only focus is keeping us out of jail,” said one text message allegedly written by Jon Hallford that a prosecutor read in court.Arguing for maintaining a high bond for Hallford, Senior Deputy District Attorney Rachael Powell said Hallford wrote that text in May of 2020. Some of the decomposing human remains in the Return to Nature Funeral Home facility in the Rocky Mountain town of Penrose were labeled as dating to 2019, four years before the bodies’ discovery by authorities this past October. In November, police arrested Hallford and his wife, Carie Hallford, in Oklahoma after they allegedly fled Colorado to avoid prosecution. They are accused of abusing corpses, stealing, laundering money and forging documents and were jailed on ...

WIC helps moms and kids eat. But finding what you need isn’t always easy

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:53:32 GMT

By KENYA HUNTER (AP Health Writer)Bianca Williams was tired of trying to find a store that either accepted federal food benefits for low-income mothers and their children or a store that had quality produce. So the Milwaukee resident — who has seven kids, including two currently being breastfed — decided in November that she’d rather turn to frozen Thanksgiving leftovers and food from family and friends. More than 6 million people in the U.S. get benefits from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women and Children, commonly known as WIC. But it’s not always easy to get the fresh produce, baby formula and other nutritious WIC-approved items. Williams’ closest Walmart shuttered in 2016. Since then, she said, WIC can be “too much of a hassle.”“Sometimes, to be honest, I don’t even use it,” said Williams, who makes about $7 too much a month to qualify for food stamps, “because it’s so hard to get to and f...

Christopher Nolan's film slammed by Peloton instructor while he was in the class

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:53:32 GMT

For many Peloton users, the point of the program is to exercise in the comfort of your own home sans judgment from others. That wasn't exactly the case for Christopher Nolan. The British filmmaker had an uncomfortable moment during a class when the instructor slammed one of his films over three years ago. Nolan revealed the story while accepting the Best Director award for his film "Oppenheimer" at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards gala. “I was on my Peloton. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!'” Nolan told the crowd. “When (film critic) Rex Reed takes a s--t on your film he doesn’t ask you to work out!"While Nolan didn't call out the exact Peloton instructor, fans on social media brought back a clip of cyclist instructor Jenn Sherman who talked about his film "Tenant" in 2020 starring David Washington and Robert Pattison. After Variety posted the story, S...

“Survey says” looks at various rankings and scorecards judging geographic locations while noting these grades are best seen as a mix of artful interpretation and data.Buzz: California’s housing costs – compared with other states – were at a seven-year low in 2022.Source: My trusty spreadsheet looked at a curious cost-of-living yardstick – the federal government’s annual “price parity” report that puts key consumer expenses into a national perspective between the 50 states and the District of Columbia. We focused on the recently released data for 2002 and compared those stats with the last time California had a better housing cost number (2015). ToplineCalifornia housing costs ran 60% above the US norm in 2022, by this math. That’s the smallest premium since 2015’s 58%.So you see, I’m not saying the cost of putting a roof over your head in California has become any bargain. I’m only highlighting a sliver of calm in California’s affordability mess.Golden State housing expenses still r...
