The chicken kebabs were ready to grill. The salad was made, and the patio table set. But when my husband fired up our outdoor gas grill — nothing happened.I go and push the button. I listen for the clicks. Nothing.“I replaced the propane tank,” he says, “so that’s not it.”“So, what is it?” I ask.He shrugs. We are out of ideas. We would not have survived long in the Stone Age.The Weber cart grill is less than two years old. We don’t use it that much, so how could it be broken? A look under the hood offers a clue. It looks like a tarpit.“Looks like some critter got in,” DC says. He reaches past the petrified pitch and pulls out a handful of frayed and chewed wires.“At least you weren’t hosting a holiday barbecue,” says John DiGioia, owner of Orlando Grill Repair, who came out the next day. “Before summer holidays, we’re booked two or three weeks out. That’s when people start to bribe you.”As DiGioia opens the lid to inspect the grill, he lets out a long slow whistle. Then he get...‘It’s just completely gone’: Harrowing Maui fire escape for Bay Area vacationer

Dave Hovis and his friends hardly noticed the advisories for strong wind gusts from Hurricane Dora passing far off shore earlier this week as they enjoyed a relaxing vacation in a friend’s waterfront home at Baby Beach in Maui. The next day, they were ramming through a gate to escape the deadly wildfire that destroyed the nearby resort town of Lahaina.“We were just hanging out in the pool and, like, boom! All this wind hit,” Hovis, 32, a San Francisco technology startup company manager, said Thursday in a telephone interview with the Bay Area News Group as he boarded a plane back to the Bay Area. “But the hurricane was 600 miles south so we thought, no big deal.”On Monday, Hovis, vacationing with four others this week at a friend’s home on the island, said they secured the inflatable pool floats and other loose items and didn’t think much more about it. But by morning, electrical power and cellular service were out.“We just hunkered do...Mountain View: Man killed in single-car crash on Highway 101; driver arrested on suspicion of DUI

By Devan Cole and Ariana de Vogue | CNNThe Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Purdue Pharma from going forward with bankruptcy proceedings, which the Biden administration has called an “unprecedented” arrangement that would ultimately offer the Sackler family broad protection from opioid-related civil claims. In agreeing to pause the settlement, the court also said it would take up the case and hear arguments this December. The case arose after the reorganization in bankruptcy of OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma – stemming from litigation arising from claims over its role in fueling the opioid addiction crisis.Until recently, Purdue was controlled by the Sackler family, who withdrew billions of dollars from the company before it filed for bankruptcy. The family has now agreed to contribute up to $6 billion to Purdue’s reorganization fund on the condition that the Sacklers receive a release from civil liability. The government, representing the US Trustee, has called the plan “except...CA police raid ‘heavily fortified’ Brentwood home, seize 1,888 marijuana plants, firearm
