The Kauai Police Department wrote, "Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau personnel spotted a snorkeler in distress and pulled her from waters. When firefighters from the Kōloa fire station arrived on scene, (Bailey) was conscious and alert."Paramedics transported Bailey to Wilcox Medical Center, where she later died. NEW YORK (AP) — The United States has seen five cases of malaria spread by mosquitos in the last two months — the first time there’s been local spread in in 20 years. There were four cases detected in Florida and one in Texas, according to a health alert issued Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Malaria is caused by a parasite that spreads through mosquito bites. Infected people can suffer fever, chills and flu-like illness. If it goes untreated, infected people can develop severe complications and die. The largest death toll in recent years has been seen in children in sub-Saharan Africa.Health officials are warning doctors, especially those in southern states where the weather is more friendly to the tropical mosquito that spreads malaria, to be aware of the possibility of infection. They also should think about how to access IV artesunate, which is the first-line treatment for severe malaria in the United States, the CDC said. The agency also said that t...Catorce opositores se medirán en las primarias de Venezuela para enfrentar al madurismo con un candidato único

TORONTO (AP) — Men’s national team coach John Herdman says the Canadian Soccer Association must quicky address its financial troubles.Interim general secretary Jason deVos was quoted Monday by TSN as saying the federation might need to explore a bankruptcy filing.“We have to find solutions and find them quick,” Herdman said Monday, a day before his team’s CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against Guadeloupe. “It’s not about pointing fingers. I think the whole group has to come together. The whole game has to come together to find a genuine solution to make sure our country can perform. The players have earned that right. The staff have earned that right. We shouldn’t be going backwards after a World Cup.”Canada’s men reached the World Cup last year for the first time since 1986.“I think everyone expected coming off the World Cup that it was going to be all sunshine and rainbows,” Herdman said. After a loss to the United States in this month’s CONCACAF Nations League fi...From hot to hotter

We always heat-up this time of the year in south Florida, but a growing surge of hot air is about to take hold. During the middle part of the week (specifically Wednesday and Thursday) some locations will probably reach records as highs soar into the middle 90ºs. What’s the reason for the added heat? It’ll be attributed to “less rain and more sun” initially. The more significant reason, though, is a pattern change that revolves around a big, expanding heat dome. This dome is beginning to extend from the Gulf of Mexico towards Florida. Once it arrives, so will the drier air and hotter temperatures. Tuesday is expected to be our transition day. It won’t be as rainy as previous days, and not as hot compared to what’s coming. Look for a mix of sun with random storms and highs just above 90-degrees. Then, beginning Wednesday, the upper level winds (high in the sky) start their switch, allowing drier and hotter air to filter into Florida. Grave concern once again for a South Florida family, a video captured an act of vandalism that took place at the Miami cemetery, New Year’s accident concerning the gravesite of two of four people who were killed in West Miami-Dade back in 2021.Last month, a similar cellphone video showed someone defacing a gravestone with a white spray instead of the black spray that was used in the previous act of vandalism.Moments later, the vandal is seen spray-painting the flowers, hammering the grave, and a memorial honoring the victims. The subject kicked everything that was placed over the grave repeatedly at the Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North Cemetery. A surveillance video captured a man in a hoodie, carrying the spray paint bottle in his hand.He had a blurred face because officials have yet not identified the subject and confirmed with 7 News, they have the image and they are still investigating. A heartbroken family member Ingrid Diaz, one of the victim’s sister spoke with 7 N...North Miami summer program intends to prevent drowning deaths with swimming lessons for kids

In South Florida, everyone is surrounded by water, but there are quite a few children who don’t know how to swim. A new program honoring two brothers who recently lost their lives hopes to change that. “That’s how you blow bubbles,” said a swimming instructor. It starts with the bubbles, but it ends with knowing how to swim.“We plan to give swimming lessons from June 26 to July 26,” said Nadege Vilsaint, executive director of the non-profit Prosperity Social and Community Development Group. It’s a new free swim camp at North Miami Thomas Sasso Park.“This swimming lesson is with great honor, in memory of Andrew and Alex,” said Vilsaint. The camp was created after 13-year-old twins, Alex and Andrew Paul, who didn’t know how to swim, drowned in April. One brother fell into the lake at Arthur Woodard Park in northwest Miami-Dade. The other went in trying to save him, both ended up drowning.Through an English-Creole translator, t...Stuck in the pattern

Editor’s Note….Tonight’s blog has been written by meteorological intern Tyler Hughes. ~JRWe’ve been starting to sound a bit like a broken record in the weather department – and the pattern we’re stuck in has no sign of retreating, at least for the rest of this week (I plead the fifth on the upcoming holiday… until tomorrow). Today saw some scattered thunderstorms roll through the area, and storms will continue overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. Those showers and storms will thin out a bit throughout the morning, and we should be able to squeak out a few dry hours in the early afternoon tomorrow. Scattered showers will make a reappearance in the evening as a low pressure system centered over upstate New York continues to spin some moisture into our area.Looking ahead through the workweek, this pattern of showers sticks around, becoming more and more isolated toward the end of the week. I think Friday could stay dry for some, with jus...Air traffic controllers union pushes for staffing solution after scathing DOT watchdog report

(CNN) — As millions of Americans are expected to pack commercial flights over the July 4th holiday, the union representing the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic controllers says a recent government watchdog report is proof the agency and Congress must fix a “flawed staffing model.”“The status quo is no longer sustainable,” said Rich Santa, head of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. The union says that Congress must “require FAA to immediately implement” new staffing standards and “conduct maximum hiring.”“There are currently 1,200 fewer fully certified controllers today compared to ten years ago,” said Santa. “FAA’s flawed staffing model and inconsistent hiring has resulted in new hires not keeping pace with attrition over the past decade.”Previous CNN reporting found that staffing issues at one key air traffic control facility in Florida triggered thousands of delayed flights over a seven-week period last summer and revealed a complaint that workers ...Legislature moves toward stricter gun laws in wake of Supreme Court decision

A raft of new gun laws introduced to the Massachusetts Legislature on Monday in response to last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning some of the state’s strictest firearms licensing laws was met with swift condemnation by rights advocates.A year after the high court decided in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that most extraordinary licensing requirements were at odds with the Second Amendment, Judiciary Committee Co-chair Rep. Michael Day filed H.4420, or An Act modernizing firearms laws to the House, a more than 100-page bill which would ban the carrying of firearms in most public places without express permission and aims to fight the rise of so-called ghost guns.Gun rights advocates were swift to react with alarm.“The proposed legislation is an abhorrent anti-civil rights effort. No community in Massachusetts faces this kind an intentional bigotry and oppression from the State Government! It is simply a post Bruen tantrum, very similar to Govern...Latest news
