PD: $3.6M bond for driver in migrant crash BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Police Department held a news conference following the violent death of eight people outside a migrant shelter Sunday.At the conference, Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda revealed that the driver of the gray SUV that struck 18 people attempted to flee the scene after the crash but was held down by people on the scene.The driver was identified as 34-year-old George Alvarez, a Brownsville local with a lengthy criminal history.He has been arraigned and formally charged with eight counts of manslaughter, 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Austin teacher arrested, accused of sexual assault of student Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for May 8, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin teacher was arrested and is facing multiple charges after he allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a student, according to an Austin Police arrest affidavit.The affidavit states David Hoelewyn, 27, is facing charges of sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between educator and student, both second-degree felonies.In the affidavit, Hoelewyn is identified as a teacher at Texans Can Academy in east Austin. The school principal told APD they started an internal investigation. The principal had statements from the teacher and student, the affidavit states. KXAN has reached out to Texans Can Academy for additional information. Court records state Hoelewyn has retained his own attorney. (NEWS10) -- The East Greenbush Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday on Columbia Turnpike in Worthman Lane. Cherokee Street shooting: Police release images of suspects ST. LOUIS - Investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department have released a series of photos of two suspects wanted in connection with a weekend shooting on Cherokee Street.According to Evita Caldwell, a police spokeswoman, the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2700 block of Cherokee Street, as the Cinco de Mayo festival was wrapping up for the day.Officers who were working a detail at the festival found the victims near the intersection of Cherokee and Ohio, Caldwell said. Both victims, a man and woman in their mid-20s, had suffered gunshot wounds to their legs.The female victim was taken to a local hospital. The male victim refused treatment at the scene.The victims told police there was a fight involving a large group of men when a woman took out a handgun and waved it around.
