Dutch elm disease has been reported back in Denver after more than a decade of its absence. The Denver forestry office discovered the disease last month in the old American elms along 17th Avenue Parkway in South Park Hill.First detected in the United States in 1928, Dutch elm disease hit the U.S. population hard through the 1930’s. The disease appeared in Denver in 1948. By 1969, it had devastated Denver’s urban elms. Then the disease slowed down for a few decades, last being detected in 2011.The leaf of an American elm tree. Colorado’s aspen stands are thriving, and that bodes well for fabulous leaf-peeping this fall according to one of the state’s leading forestry experts.Dan West, entomologist for the Colorado State Forest Service and a member of the faculty at Colorado State University, spent most of the past two months flying over the state’s 24 million acres of forest. The main purpose of his annual aerial observation tour is to assess forest health, but it also gives him a unique perspective to forecast the quality of fall foliage colors.“They look better than they’ve looked in a very long time,” West said. “Aspen look really well, even in places that over the last several years have kind of struggled.”As a result, West also is predicting a return to normal timing for the color change. He expects to see aspen in the northern mountains — generally north of Interstate 70 — to start turning in the middle of this month and run through the third or f...These DU alums found love in their accounting classroom. Mad’s World: If you’re going to appear as a contestant on one of the reality TV music competitions (America’s Got Talent, American Idol, The Voice, X-Factor), your best bet is to get to the last few, and then not win. Madilyn Bailey is the latest addition to that list.Bailey appeared on AGT in 2021, initially impressing the judges with a song made out of the hate comments she received online. She would go on to make it to the semi-finals before exiting, with magician Dustin Tavella eventually winning (Brooke Simpson, in fourth, was the highest placed musical act).“If I were to go back and say should I do this again, yeah I would,” Bailey says, two years later. “I think it was cool, because it exposed me to a brand new audience. Programming autonomous behavior is very difficult.Doing this will require standards. The government is pretty good at getting technology companies to agree upon standards, but it is not a rapid process.Edward MontgomeryA: Yours was one of many points of view on his thought-provoking comments.Q: I don’t know if we’ll ever see 100 percent autonomous vehicles, but Wes’ prediction of no traffic lights might rankle some non-autonomous pedestrians. The mix of human-driven cars and AV’s is a dangerous one, and hard on AV designersA big issue with interacting with driverless vehicles is not being able to make eye contact.
