Coach John Harbaugh said last month that the Ravens would draft a wide receiver. On Thursday night, they followed through. With the 22nd overall pick, Baltimore selected Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers.Though the Ravens had already bolstered their receiving corps this offseason with the free agent additions of two-time All-Pro Odell Beckham Jr. and veteran Nelson Agholor, it’s clear that general manager Eric DeCosta felt the need to continue to strengthen one of the weakest positions on the roster. It also gives a new weapon to star quarterback Lamar Jackson, who earlier Thursday agreed to a five-year deal worth a reported $260 million, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL in terms of annual average salary. What Flowers lacks in size — he’s 5 feet 9 and 182 pounds — he more than makes up for in elusiveness, speed and precision route running. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the NFL scouting combine had a 58.3% contested catch rate las...

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Darnell Wright helped Tennessee re-emerge as a national power. And the Chicago Bears hope the feisty blocker can do something similar for them.Chicago selected the Tennessee offensive tackle with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, giving quarterback Justin Fields more protection after trading back one spot with Philadelphia.“That’s what I’m here for is for anything he needs,” Wright said. “That’s my job to keep him clean. Amazing. Amazing quarterback and the things he does, we’re going to have a great team.”He said he was “in shock” and that his mind was “racing 1,000 miles per hour.” But he also expressed confidence.“I’m big and I’m strong,” Wright said. “But I don’t think people will realize once they really get to see some more of me, they’ll see how athletic I am and that I can play both sides as needed. I know I’m coming into a room. I just wanna earn the respect of those guys first. But I can play probably any...

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks continued the overhaul of their defense, selecting Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon with the No. 5 pick of the NFL draft on Thursday night. Despite edge rusher Tyree Wilson and defensive tackle Jalen Carter still on the board, the Seahawks opted to solidify their cornerback position a year after Seattle spent two draft picks on cornerbacks in Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant. Seattle came back with the No. 20 pick and grabbed another offensive playmaker for quarterback Geno Smith selecting Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the first wide receiver taken in the draft. Witherspoon was regarded as one of the top two cornerbacks in the draft despite being slightly undersized from what Seattle has opted for in the past with players at the position. Witherspoon blossomed in his final season at Illinois where he was the Big Ten defensive back of the year, had three interceptions and 17 passes defensed. “I’m energetic, physical. I&#...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles selected Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the No. 9 overall pick of the NFL draft on Thursday night, trading up one spot with the Chicago Bears to get a player who may have still been available because of his role in a fatal car crash.Carter was once projected to be the No. 1 overall selection before the Bears traded that pick to the quarterback-needy Carolina Panthers. There were questions about how far the standout defensive lineman would slip because of his involvement in a crash that killed a teammate, offensive lineman Devin Willock, and a Georgia recruiting staffer, Chandler LeCroy.Carter was given one year of probation and fined $1,000 last month after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing related to the wreck.“They’re just getting the best person in the draft,” Carter said.Carter was considered the best interior defensive lineman in this year’s class, but the crash and its a...
