San Jose’s Tabard Theatre going old school with weekend telethon

Tabard Theatre Executive Artistic Director Jonathan Williams will channel his inner Jerry Lewis this weekend when he stages a 27-hour fundraising telethon at the downtown San Jose venue. And like most fun ideas, this one was born of equal parts inspiration and desperation. The theater found itself with a hole in its schedule this weekend, Williams said, and he decided to double down on its new role as a performance venue by quickly putting together the telethon. Sure, it’s a little bit kitsch, but that’s right in line with the new Tabard vibe.“This is a fundraiser, but we also want to get the message out there that we’re reinventing ourselves, no longer as a theater-producing organization but as a nonprofit with a new mission centered around creating a safe and supportive space for artists to share their work with the community,” Williams said. “We want to galvanize the community that appreciates this space.”When he thought about the range of...‘Intentional concealment’: Prosecutors claim former Fremont city manager hid misdeeds to strike rich payday

Fremont’s embattled former city manager is facing new accusations of fraudulently concealing his misuse of a city-issued credit card to land a final, nearly-300,000 check from the city while on his way out, according to a new criminal complaint.Mark Danaj, whose tenure as the city’s top administrator ended ignominiously in 2021, now stands accused of obtaining money, labor or property by false pretenses after prosecutors say he mislead Fremont’s City Council while negotiating a hefty severance package during his final days on the job. The latest felony charge includes a special allegation of aggravated white collar crime, because the suspected amount taken from the city reached six figures. The new allegation comes days before Danaj was set to appear for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Prosecutors last year filed felony charges of embezzlement and public officer crime against Danaj, alleging he repeatedly used a city credit card on travel, medical services, food d...Police seeking Texas resident in shooting of East Oakland man

This is why you can’t hold grudges in the NBA.In this league, a player can be a team’s sworn enemy for a decade — and vice versa. Then, in a shocking draft-day trade, that player joins that team.Chris Paul — yes, that Chris Paul — is now a Golden State Warrior. He was traded by Washington for Jordan Poole, Ryan Rollins, and draft picks on Thursday. It’s going to take a while for us to collectively wrap our heads around this one.But at the core of it all is the well-known fact that everyone can overlook things when they’re desperate. The Warriors were desperate to rid themselves of Poole. The four-year contract extension the team signed him to before the start of last season was proven to be a mistake. Not only did Poole fail to perform like a nine-figure player and future face of the franchise this past season — particularly in the playoffs — but the emotional damage that rippled through the team following Draymond Green’s punch of Poole in the preseason never h...Harry wanted Trump and Putin to open up about childhood trauma for Spotify podcast: report

To launch his career as a star podcaster and to fulfill his end of the reported $20 million deal he and Meghan Markle signed with Spotify, Prince Harry floated several ideas for shows that didn’t impress producers and that may have contributed to the company’s decision to part ways with the couple.According to a report by Bloomberg’s Soundbite newsletter, one questionable concept would be for the renegade British prince to focus on the issue of childhood trauma and to interview a series of controversial global figures “about their early formative years and how those experiences resulted in the adults they are today.”Some of Harry’s dream guests included recently indicted former U.S. President Donald Trump, autocratic Russian President Vladimir Putin and polarizing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, according to newsletter writer Ashley Carman, citing sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity.Russian President V...Acclaimed Bay Area arts organizations performs two Juneteenth concerts

NHL teams won’t have special jerseys for pregame warmups during themed nights next season, the result of a handful of players refusing to wear rainbow-colored Pride jerseys this past season and causing unwelcome distractions. The league’s Board of Governors agreed Thursday with Commissioner Gary Bettman’s view that the refusals overshadowed teams’ efforts in hosting Pride nights that in some cases included auctioning off the warmup jerseys. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican lawmakers voted to cut the University of Wisconsin System’s budget by $32 million on Thursday despite a projected record-high $7 billion state budget surplus, leaving the university nearly half a billion dollars short of what it requested. The cut comes in reaction to Republican anger over diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs on the system’s 13 universities. Republican leaders have said the $32 million is what they estimated would be spent on those programs over the next two years.“They need to refocus their priorities on being partners on developing our workforce and the future of the state, and we’re hopeful that they’re going to be ready to do that as we move forward,” Republican state Rep. Mark Born, co-chair of the Legislature’s budget-writing committee, said at a news conference. The university system could get the $32 million back at a later date if it shows how it would be spent on workforce development efforts, an...US Navy detected ‘anomaly’ in underwater acoustics that was likely Titan implosion on Sunday, official tells AP
