Hollywood will be back in Boston later this month as a film starring a pair of local A-list actors brings cameras to the North End.The filming will prompt a temporary closure for the famous Bova’s Bakery, whose owner recently said he is “nervous but excited,” for a moment in the spotlight. Bova’s hasn’t closed its doors for nearly a hundred years. That streak is about to come to an end though as owner Ralph Bova has agreed to close his around-the-clock bakery for five days from March 20 to March 25 to make way for stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. A new production company created by Damon and Affleck’s brother, Ben, is producing the movie, which is called “The Instigators.” The movie follows two crooks who go on the run with their therapist when a robbery goes wrong. Bova said a police officer will come in for the scene at Bova’s Bakery and smash glass cases with a nightstick following the botched heist. The glass, Bova said, is movie glass. “Not mine,” he continued. “Th...Patriots players, Gov. Healey participate in ‘Saving by Shaving’ fundraiser for Boston Children’s Hospital

Current and former Patriots including Devin McCourty, Matt Light and Matthew Slater were all on hand to get a close cut this year. Healey received a trim. “It’s just wonderful to be part of the spirit of generosity and compassion here in the state,” she said. “I’m just happy to be here today,” McCourty said. DETROIT — General Motors is offering buyouts to most of its U.S. salaried workforce and some global executives in an effort to trim costs as it makes the transition to electric vehicles. The Detroit automaker wouldn’t say how many workers it is targeting, but confirmed that the move is aimed at accelerating attrition to meet a previously announced goal of $2 billion in cost cuts by the end of next year. GM has about 58,000 salaried workers in the U.S.The company says the offers also are designed to avoid any possible firings at a later date.Offers will go to white-collar workers with at least five years of service, and global executives who have been with the company at least two years. The decision to offer buyouts comes at an uncertain time for the auto industry, which is in the midst of a transition from internal combustion to electric vehicles. GM has a goal of selling only electric passenger vehicles by 2035.The switch is requiring more research and development spending on ...Clarke Schmidt solid, Oswald Peraza returns in Yankees’ Grapefruit League loss to Red Sox

And just like that, Clarke Schmidt likely has been catapulted into a concrete rotation spot to begin the season. With news of Carlos Rodon beginning the 2023 campaign on the injured list due to a strained forearm muscle, Schmidt is the front-runner to be the fifth starter for the Bombers. The 27-year-old took the ball first in the Bombers’ 11-3 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.Schmidt allowed three hits and two runs over two innings while striking out three. The former first-round pick continued to flash the newly developed cutter that figures to be a factor for him this season. With Rodon and Frankie Montas — who underwent shoulder surgery on Feb. 21 — hurt, the organization’s pitching depth will be tested out of the gate.Schmidt says he and the rest of the pitching staff will be up for the challenge.“[The Yankees] pitching development is the real deal,” Schmidt told the YES Network after his outing. “A...Knicks hope to continue road dominance, maintain top-5 playoff spot during West Coast trip

For most teams, the implication of “road trip” is that it’s more daunting. For the Knicks, it’s more in their comfort zone.New York’s trend of playing better away from Madison Square Garden has held up through 80% of the season, making the Knicks the only NBA team with a better record this season on the road.It was a reassuring development as they departed for a four-game Western Coast swing that began late Thursday in Sacramento, with the Knicks entering the evening tied for the league’s best road record with Boston and Milwaukee. During their previous lengthy Western Conference trip in November, they might have saved Tom Thibodeau’s job by beating the Nuggets, Jazz and Thunder. Now their goal is to maintain a top-5 playoff spot with games at the Kings, Clippers, Lakers and Blazers.“It’s extremely important,” said Josh Hart. “Obviously we have Sac. A tough Clipper team. A Laker team that’s been playing well and d...Ex-Goldman banker gets 10-year sentence in 1MDB looting plot

By BOBBY CAINA CALVAN (Associated Press)NEW YORK (AP) — A former Goldman Sachs banker was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison for his role in looting a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund of billions of dollars used to finance lavish parties, a superyacht, premium real estate and even the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.”Roger Ng was convicted last April by a U.S. District Court jury in Brooklyn, but he continues to deny charges that he conspired to launder money and violated two anti-bribery laws.Prosecutors said Ng and his co-conspirators helped the Malaysian fund, known as 1MDB, to raise $6.5 billion through bond sales — only to participate in a scheme that siphoned off more than two-thirds of the money, some of which went to pay bribes and kickbacks.Reading from a prepared statement, Ng pleaded for mercy from U.S. District Judge Margo Brodie.“I’m embarrassed. I’m ashamed,” he told the judge. “I don’t want to live in...California professor puts Marvel’s newest Black superhero back in the spotlight

Jared Verse spent last week watching the NFL Scouting Combine, not as a participant but as an observer. It wasn’t exactly the way many assumed the talented Florida State edge rusher would make his presence known. At one point, the 6-foot-4, 253-pound defensive end was projected as a first-round selection after a stellar first FBS season in which he led the team in tackles for loss (16.5), sacks (9) and blocked kicks (1).He received an 81.2 grade from Pro Football Focus which is better than most of the edge rushers projected in the first and second rounds of the NFL draft outside of Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. (83.6) and USC’s Tuli Tuipulotu (82.1).Despite the lure of a multimillion contract, Verse returned to the Seminoles in 2023.“I always wanted him to feel like he was doing what was best for himself,” said defensive ends coach John Papuchis. “So when it came time for him to make that decision, I made a conscious effort not to weigh in too much o...Colbie Young poised to be key playmaker in Hurricanes’ new offense

Last season, the Hurricanes searched for a playmaking wide receiver to replace the production they lost when Mike Harley Jr. and Charleston Rambo left for the NFL. For two games, it looked like Colbie Young was going to be that playmaker.Young had two excellent games against Virginia Tech and Duke, but after quarterback Tyler Van Dyke suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out for most of the rest of the 2022 campaign, Miami’s offense faltered and Young’s production slowed.Entering his second season with the Hurricanes, Young may take a step forward and become a major difference in Miami’s passing game.“He’s really taken a step as a leader in the wide receiver room,” Van Dyke said on the first day of UM’s spring practices. “I’m excited for him. He’s a guy that’ll go up and get the ball. He’s fast for his size and he’s grown a lot from last season until now, and he’s still going to grow.”Young...Latest news
