The land, which will be known as the Lawn at Brushy Creek, runs along the banks of the creek between Mays and Georgetown Streets, and will also create more trail connectivity. What will the park look like? It is unknown what the park will look like at this time, but the city approved a $277,834 contract with Design Workshop to create the master plan. Following Mama D’s tradition, Caffe Biaggio to host free buffet meal Sunday, March 19, for St. Joseph’s Day Caffe Biaggio, an Italian restaurant in St. Anthony Park, is opening its doors for a free meal Sunday, March 19, as part of a tradition that began 55 years ago.The meal is served in honor of St. Joseph’s Day, a Catholic feast holiday, Cafe Biaggio owner Shari Breed said. The buffet-style meal, consisting of Italian-American comfort foods, begins at 1 p.m. and is open to anyone. Donations are welcome but not necessary, Breed said.Breed’s partner, John D’Agostino, was the son of Giovanna D’Agostino, well-known around the Twin Cities and the country as Mama D. Mama D began offering free meals on St. Joseph’s Day in the 1960s at her son’s Dinkytown restaurant, Sammy D’s.As Mama D’s own profile grew — she cooked for Tony Bennett and appeared on TV with Regis Philbin, her Pioneer Press obituary reported — the restaurant was eventually renamed after her before moving to St. Paul and closing in the early 2000s. Mama D herself passed away in 2009, a few days bef...

The height of domestic luxury? Designer ice.

The height of domestic luxury? Designer ice. Nobody loves ice more than Americans. It’s a running joke, a quirk of the national personality: Iced drinks are as American as rock ’n’ roll, pickup trucks and to-go cups.Way back in 1895, Mark Twain wrote that ice had become so inextricably linked with the United States that “there is but a single specialty with us, only one thing that can be called by the wide name ‘American.’ That is the national devotion to ice-water.”For years to come, all ice was good ice. But now it’s entering a new Gilded Age. Frozen water, which costs most Americans virtually nothing, is being redefined as a luxury item.At fashion-brand parties, ice cubes stamped with the company’s logo are de rigueur. On tables at high-end weddings, fairy lights in Mason jars are out and wildflowers suspended in $14 ice cubes are in. TikTok creators routinely draw 30 million views overnight (and sizable paychecks) by showing off stocked ice drawers, along with retail links for buying specialty ice molds in all shapes and s...

Good morning my name is Darlene and I wanted to tell you about why I’m so mad at my sister right now to see if you think I’m overreacting. Both my sister and I waited until we were in our mid-30's to get married. I got married back in January, and it was a great wedding with my sister as the Maid of Honor. My husband and I danced to the song All of Me by John Legend and it was beautiful. Now my sister is getting married in May. It will mostly be the same family members with just a few friends coming to the wedding. I just found out my sister is also going to use John Legend's All of Me as her wedding song! I was so angry that she stole our song and asked her to change it, but she refused saying after hearing it at our wedding it feels perfect for her too. Now my sister is s...

Ask Amy: Needy teacher must learn how to read people

Ask Amy: Needy teacher must learn how to read people Dear Amy: Several years ago, my daughter had a preschool teacher she loved who was fired for, what seemed at the time, a dubious reason.I related to her predicament, and I met up with her a couple of times in the immediate aftermath so that my daughter could see her and to talk about the situation.I did not expect to develop a long-term friendship with her.Since that time, she has contacted me sporadically, whenever she finds herself in a difficult emotional situation. We are not friends, and she only contacts me when she’s having an emergency. Then it’s urgent, at weird times, and time-consuming. It’s bizarre behavior. She is married and has family and friends. I’m not even close enough with her to recommend that she see a therapist. The most recent time this occurred, I hadn’t heard from her in about a year. She asked if we could meet up and I told her that I was really busy preparing for some travel, and that it would have to be scheduled for another tim...

'We cannot wait another 60 years to achieve gender equality'  On International Women’s day, Chairman of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee Robert Biedroń issued the following statement.“The European Parliament has made some significant steps towards achieving gender equality over the last twelve months. Parliament approved landmark rules to boost gender equality on corporate boards in November, and a deal was reached on binding pay transparency measures in December, to name but a few."But we still have so far to go."If we continue at the current pace, the European Union is at least 60 years away from reaching complete gender equality. We cannot wait another 60 years."Over the last few years, there has been a backlash against women’s rights both in Europe and around the world. This worrisome phenomenon puts many of the hard-earned gains that women have achieved in jeopardy, particularly in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights."The decision of the US Supreme Court to renounce the federal constitutional right to abo...
