LOS ANGELES — The usual routine was disrupted by an unexpected but welcome notification on Braxton Key’s phone. It was Tuesday, before a preseason game against the Clippers. “I came back from my shootaround and I took out my phone,” Key said. “Usually I text my girl and a couple other people.”But this time he was surprised to see a text from Michael Malone, who was still on personal leave following the death of his father a week earlier. He was imploring Key to slow down on offense. Malone liked how Key was defending and using his physicality, but he thought Key looked a bit uncomfortable at the other end, a natural growing pain for a player adapting to a new system.“I was just doing some things that were uncharacteristic,” Key said. “Trying to do a little too much at the offensive end. So I listened to him.”Key played his best game of the preseason that night, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.Malone, the ninth-year Nugge...How Russell Wilson’s contract extension could force Broncos to consider benching him later this season

Russell Wilson sees good in the future.“I feel great, the ball’s spinning well, I feel like I’m seeing it well for the most part and then also moving well,” Wilson told reporters Wednesday. “I’ve got all the confidence in the world.”Wilson started the season with nine touchdown passes in his first four games, but has turned the ball over three times and been sacked eight over the Broncos’ past two losses, including a 95-yard night his last time out at Kansas City.Denver coach Sean Payton said when it comes to life in the NFL, “there’s a fine line between a rut and a groove.” Over a 1-5 start, that’s applied to Wilson, Denver’s offense and the club overall. But regardless of whether the Broncos find a groove or remain stuck in a rut as they move toward midseason and past a Week 9 bye, they’re approaching an inflection point with their quarterback that centers around a question with repercussions not just for 2023 but multiple years...CSU Rams vs. UNLV football: How to watch, storylines and staff predictions

So, at first glance, it appears UNLV finally has a team. But a further examination of the Rebels’ five wins indicates they haven’t beaten one team with a winning record. In fact, the combined record of those opponents is 9-26, including FCS Bryant (3-3). That falls in line with where UNLV sits in advanced metrics like ESPN’s predictive SP+ rankings (No. 87). Thus, the jury is still out on first-year head coach Barry Odom’s squad.Underdogs, again: One place that does appear to be buying the former Mizzou head coach’s program? Vegas, baby. Video games don’t necessarily function as a means to decompress, the way Jamal Murray plays them.Occasionally the Nuggets point guard and some old friends from youth basketball still hop online together from their respective PlayStations to hang out remotely. The games vary: Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty.Regardless of the choice, an unusual trend developed at one point.“We’ll all say, ‘Yo, download this game,’” said Josiah Riley, one of Murray’s former AAU and prep teammates. “Cool. He’ll play it the first day and he’ll be terrible. And then the next day we’ll play, and all of a sudden he’s beating everybody. We’re like, ‘What have you been doing?’”Once, Riley was visiting Murray in Denver when he says he walked downstairs to find Murray, controller in hand, using the PlayStation. Riley checked the PlayStation app on his phone. According to that, Murray’s account wasn’t currently in use. He wasn’t playing video games. Except he was.“Caught him in the act,” Riley said, lau...Elias: Science only seems to justify Newsom’s policies when convenient

Gov. Gavin Newsom is a big advocate of science — the concept, not the magazine. SAN FRANCISCO – Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. briefly spoke in front of some 13,000 fans before an open practice on Thursday about the summer blockbuster trade that flipped Jordan Poole for Chris Paul. Dunleavy told the fans at Chase Center that he reached out to both parties once the trade sending Poole, Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins to the Wizards was finalized in early July. “It was not an easy discussion, but I think those guys are in a good place to continue their careers,” Dunleavy said. “On our end, we reached out to Chris and welcomed him aboard.”For Dunleavy, who was promoted from vice president of basketball operations to general manager after Bob Myers stepped away at the end of last season, it was his first big move as GM.Prior to his work in the front office, Dunleavy was the team’s No. 3 overall pick in the 2002 draft and enjoyed a 15-year career as a player. Dunleavy told the fans that the top priority in the offseason was to keep the veteran...Opinion: California needs more Latino physicians — 6% isn’t enough

I think often about why I chose such a challenging career path, and hear the echoes from the voices of educators and administrators who told me I couldn’t do it.I’ve worked as a physician in California for 14 years — many in so-called Federally Qualified Health Centers in underserved areas. In California there is a lack of representation not only with Latino physicians, but Black physicians as well. This is a major barrier to achieving health equity.Millions of patients are not getting the quality care they deserve from doctors who look like them and speak their language. Research has shown that newly trained physicians of color answer the call to return to their communities and provide culturally competent care that results in improved patient outcomes.California has a lot of work to do to build a representative workforce. While the statewide Latino population is 39%, Latinas make up less than 3% of California physicians, and Latinos overall account for only 6%. LAS VEGAS — A lawyer speaking for the former street gang leader charged with killing Tupac Shakur in 1996 said Thursday he sees “obvious defenses” in the murder case in Las Vegas.“There’s no gun, there’s no car and there’s no witnesses from 27 years ago,” attorney Ross Goodman told reporters after the briefest of court hearings, at which he told a Nevada judge he was close to being hired to represent Duane “Keffe D” Davis.Clark County District Judge Tierra Jones gave Davis and Goodman two weeks to reach agreement, saying she wants to “get this case moving.” She reset Davis’ arraignment for Nov. 2.Goodman told reporters that although he doesn’t yet represent Davis, he expects Davis will plead not guilty and seek release from jail pending trial.
