Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a former political prisoner and CEO of Yukos Oil company, is the author of “The Russia Conundrum: How the West Fell for Putin’s Power Gambit — and How to Fix It.”Quite often, in the comments to my posts in Russian — mostly left by Russians living in Russia — people write that they’re exhausted with all the incessant talk on social networks and that it’s time to do something to topple the regime of President Vladimir Putin. They often directly suggest I start funding paramilitary organizations based in Ukraine, like the Russian Volunteer Corps or the Free Russia Legion.”But the majority of Russians living abroad who actively denounce Putin object to any violent action. In fact, they’re even against calls for nonviolent action from abroad, as they might ultimately lead to violence inside Russia against political activists, worsening their plight. And the rebellion led by the paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin starkly exposed this split in thinking. From the very...Police investigating hit-and-run crash in Hyde Park

A local man on a mission to find his wife a new kidney has turned to public transit and the power of a public ad to save his wife’s life. Paul Savuto launched the “1 Kidney 4 Deb” campaign almost one year ago. Now, he and his wife, Deb, are hoping a series of ads will help find a kidney donor. Deb has a rare genetic disease called alport syndrome. Her kidneys began to fail in 2022 and, at the time, her husband stepped up, donating his kidney.“Not only has my husband saved my life once, I have him as an advocate,” Deb said. Now, though, the kidney Paul donated needs to be replaced. Deb said the lifespan for a living kidney is anywhere from 12 to 21 years. So, the couple is now hoping MBTA commuters can help. “Once we determined that we weren’t going to have the opportunity to keep it within the family as it were, we started looking at social media and other outlets to get the word out so that Deb could get another kidney,” Paul said. The couple purchased 120 a...Proposal in Newton calls for ban on cosmetics made with plastic glitter, other items

Sparkly makeup has sparked controversy in Newton as the Newton City Council weighs a proposal that would ban cosmetics made with plastic glitter. The proposal is part of an effort to protect the environment. Glitter is also not the only plastic product that could be on the chopping block. Speaking on Tuesday, those who love glitter shared their reactions. “I love glitter, I use glitter every day,” said Eden Cha.In addition to glitter, the proposal would ban helium balloons, floss sticks and some types of takeout food containers. Alan Gordon is with the Newton Sustainable Materials Management Commission. He helped draft the ordinance with the goal of reducing the amount of single-use plastics throughout Newton. “The floss sticks, the small items — they are not going to significantly move the needle on the use of plastics, but it does get people to think about alternatives across the board,” he said. In terms of glittery makeup, Gordon said the pro...North Korea silent about its apparent detention of the US soldier who bolted across the border

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea was silent about the highly unusual entry of an American soldier across the Koreas’ heavily fortified border although it test-fired short-range missiles Wednesday in its latest weapons display.More than half a day after the soldier bolted into North Korea during a tour in the border village of Panmunjom, there was no word on the fate of Private 2nd Class Travis King, the first known American detained in the North in nearly five years. The North’s missile launches Wednesday morning were seen as a protest of the deployment of a U.S. nuclear-armed submarine in South Korea the previous day and weren’t likely related to King’s border crossing.“It’s likely that North Korea will use the soldier for propaganda purposes in the short term and then as a bargaining chip in the mid-to-long term,” said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in South Korea.King, 23, was a cavalry scout with the 1st Armored Division who ha...Things to know about the revived investigation into Tupac Shakur’s shooting death
